I hear this all the time! In fact, I hear this on a daily basis. Not just from customers, but people I know. I see posts on social media too.
I feel this is a big problem right now where no one is truly happy.
- Take some paper and a pen and write down everything you hate about your job. Any detail, no matter how small, write it down. Even something like; I don’t like the coffee they have in the break room.
- Ok, now look at everything you’ve written. Move these things into 3 columns. Column 1 – absolute deal breakers – like the job is too far from where you live/the pay isn’t enough. Column 2 – things that aren’t deal breakers but you’re not happy with – like the role is a bit boring/ don’t really like your colleagues. Column 3 – anything else – like the colour of the walls drive you mad/you have to pay for the coffee in the break room.
- Now those in the absolute deal breakers column are the ones you want to focus on. What was on the list? Let’s look at each one in turn. Think about everything on that list. If those deal breakers cannot be changed, like your place of work is too far from where you live, that’s something you can’t change (unless there’s a second place of business they run closer to you) If you really can’t change the things about your job that affect you the most, you need to get another job. Let’s assume for the next steps that’s what you are going to do.
- Think about what you have been doing. Every job you learn something from. You learn a skill, whether it was a new computer system you used that would give you some additional tech experience. Maybe you were made supervisor, so this gives you some experience of managing other people. Maybe you’ve done some voluntary work so think about what you did in this role. I want you to note down on your paper all the skills you have. There will be lots. Note down at least 10, if not more.
- Now note down the things that interest you. What do you love doing? Note down at least 5 things. Now with those skills and those loves of yours, can you think of a job role that fits in with you? The next step is to Google the kinds of job roles that might interest you. Even if you only put a few words into Google, such as work with dogs, see what comes up.
